Kaliabor (Nagaon), Sept. 9: In a heartwarming display of community spirit, residents of Sekoni village in Assam’s Kaliabor area on Wednesday successfully rescued a wild elephant calf that had fallen into a pit and remained trapped overnight near the Shil Khorong Shiva Temple.

The young calf, which was reportedly roaming with its mother, accidentally slipped into the pit and could not free itself. Local residents spotted the distressed animal early in the morning and immediately launched a collective rescue effort. Working together, the villagers carefully extracted the calf from the pit and helped it return to the wild.

Forest department personnel were also present at the site and assisted during the operation. The rescue has drawn widespread appreciation for the compassion and quick action shown by the local community towards the wild animal.

The incident comes against the backdrop of continuing human-elephant conflict in various parts of Assam, where wild elephants frequently enter human settlements in search of food, sometimes leading to crop damage, property destruction and tragic confrontations. Amid such challenges, the Kaliabor rescue has been hailed as a positive example of how local communities can play a constructive role in wildlife protection and emergency response.

Nature lovers and members of the public have praised the villagers for prioritising the safety of the calf and ensuring its safe release back into its natural habitat.
