Guwahati, September 14, 2026: UK Deputy High Commissioner to East and Northeast India, Dr. Andrew Fleming, arrived in Assam on Monday for his 10th visit to the state, describing the trip as an “anniversary visit” aimed at deepening ties between Assam and the United Kingdom.
Fleming highlighted that the visit coincides with the presence of several leading British infrastructure companies in Assam this week. Taking to social media platform X, he also praised the newly opened terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati.
“This is an anniversary visit (10th time to Assam) and an exciting one as we have some top UK infrastructure companies visiting this week,” Fleming posted. Referring to the new terminal, he wrote: “Like me they will surely appreciate the new Guwahati Airport terminal – wow, Singapore vibes with an Assamese touch.”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma responded by welcoming the diplomat. “Welcome to Assam, H.E Fleming. I am sure this anniversary visit will mark a new chapter in closer UK-Assam ties, bolstered by the strong partnership between India and the UK under Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership,” Sarma said.
The Chief Minister also addressed Fleming’s observation about the greenery inside the terminal, clarifying that the plants are natural and complement the bamboo elements used in the airport’s design, which draws inspiration from Assam’s natural and cultural landscape.
Fleming’s visit comes amid expanding India-UK cooperation in infrastructure, trade, investment and related sectors, with Assam actively seeking greater international partnerships and investment.
