Three people were burnt alive and two others critically injured on Thursday when a vehicle lost control, slammed into a streetlight pole and burst into flames in Assam’s Nagaon district.

The tragic accident occurred early on September 24, 2026, at Kenapatty near Puranigudam. The vehicle, bearing registration number AR 01 W 5107, was travelling from Arunachal Pradesh towards Guwahati when the driver allegedly lost control and rammed into a streetlight pole positioned in the middle of the road.

The impact immediately triggered a fire that rapidly engulfed the vehicle. Three occupants trapped inside could not escape and died on the spot due to severe burn injuries. Two others — identified as Vikas Kumar and Sonu Kumar — sustained critical injuries. They were initially given medical attention locally before being shifted to Guwahati for advanced treatment, where their condition remains critical.

Police said the occupants were reportedly from Bihar. Preliminary information indicated that the three deceased had boarded the vehicle midway during the journey. The vehicle was owned by Vikas Kumar, while Sonu Kumar was driving at the time of the crash.

Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the accident, including how the vehicle went out of control and the circumstances under which the three deceased joined the journey. Identities of the deceased are still being formally established.

The incident has left local residents shocked and has once again highlighted concerns over road safety, particularly the placement of streetlight poles and vehicle control on highways in the region.
