Sivasagar, Sept 10: In a late-night operation, Sivasagar police on Wednesday arrested Raju Ali, a man allegedly involved in drug trafficking and related criminal activities for more than ten years, from near the Dikhau embankment close to the local cremation ground.
Acting on specific intelligence, a team from Sadar Police Station swooped on the area shortly after midnight and detained Ali without resistance. Officials said the operation was carried out close to the embankment, a short distance from the police station itself.
Police sources described Ali as a long-standing figure in the local narcotics trade. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and other applicable laws. Further interrogation is under way to map his network and possible associates.
Senior officers confirmed that the arrest forms part of the district police’s intensified drive against drug peddling. No contraband was immediately recovered at the scene, though searches of related locations are continuing.
Ali was produced before a local court and remanded to judicial custody. Police have appealed to the public to share any information that could help dismantle the wider syndicate.
