On the morning of Maha Navami, devotees across Assam thronged temples, community pandals, and sacred sites from Guwahati to the remotest corners of the state, marking one of the most significant days of the ongoing Durga Puja festivities. Early rituals began well before sunrise, with women and families performing traditional offerings, lighting lamps, and seeking blessings for prosperity and protection. In Guwahati, major pandals reported record footfall, while rural shrines saw processions of devotees carrying flowers, sweets, and ceremonial items.
The festive atmosphere was underscored by a visible security presence. Assam Police and central forces intensified border surveillance, particularly along the India-Bangladesh frontier, and maintained legal oversight at key gathering points to prevent any untoward incidents. Officials noted that the combination of large crowds and the ongoing Puja season required careful coordination between district administrations, local police stations, and intelligence units. Traffic arrangements in cities like Guwahati and Silchar were adjusted to ease congestion caused by pandal-hopping and processions.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma used the occasion to highlight the state government’s women’s entrepreneurship scheme, which provides phased financial support to members of self-help groups. Speaking during a public interaction linked to the festivities, he emphasized how the initiative aims to move beneficiaries from seed capital toward sustained self-reliance. The scheme has been positioned as part of broader efforts to empower women economically while cultural celebrations continue.
Local reports also captured lighter, memorable moments of the celebrations. In Guwahati, a 36-foot-long gamusa dedicated to the late singer Zubeen Garg became a focal point of public emotion, while a deer was spotted wandering along Zoo Road on Ashtami night, briefly capturing public attention before being guided away by authorities. Across the state, community kitchens, cultural programmes, and traditional performances continued alongside the religious observances, reflecting Assam’s characteristic blend of devotion and collective participation.
Authorities have appealed for continued cooperation from the public, urging people to follow safety guidelines, avoid overcrowding in sensitive areas, and report any suspicious activity. With the remaining days of Durga Puja still ahead, officials indicated that the elevated security posture would remain in place until the festivities conclude.
