Guwahati, September 2: Three members of a family were killed and one person injured when a landslide struck a residential area in Mathgharia, Guwahati, early on Tuesday. The victims — a couple and their daughter — were asleep inside their house when the slope collapsed under the weight of incessant rain, burying them under debris.
Rescuers pulled out the family’s 19-year-old son alive from under the rubble. He was rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. Officials said the landslide occurred in the early hours after prolonged rainfall saturated the hillside.
District authorities have begun a risk assessment of nearby houses. Residents in vulnerable spots may be evacuated if the slopes are found unstable. Police and disaster response teams remain at the site to clear debris and prevent further accidents.
The incident is part of a wider spell of rain-related disruption across the city. A separate landslide elsewhere in Guwahati claimed the life of a 65-year-old woman, taking the day’s rain-linked death toll in the capital to four, according to preliminary reports.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who visited affected areas and reviewed the situation, has directed officials to intensify monitoring of landslide-prone zones. The state government continues to transfer interim flood relief to families hit by the ongoing monsoon distress in several districts.
Meteorological officials have warned of further heavy rain in parts of Assam, keeping large sections of Guwahati and surrounding hills on alert.
