An Indian pilot has been widely celebrated as a hero after thwarting a violent mid-air attack that could have ended in disaster.
Captain Smit Machchhar was at the controls of flydubai Flight 1073 when an attacker entered the cockpit and stabbed him. Despite sustaining severe injuries, Machchhar continued to fight back. Critically, he managed to unlock the cockpit door, enabling Israeli passengers and the Emirati crew members to rush in, restrain the assailant and bring the situation under control.
Their collective action ensured that every one of the 174 people on board survived. The aircraft was diverted and landed safely.
Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a public tribute, stating: “This man is a hero.” The official post highlighted the pilot’s determination under extreme pressure and the subsequent intervention by passengers and crew. It noted the powerful symbolism of the moment: “Indian. Israeli. Emirati. Different nationalities. One extraordinary act of courage.” The ministry also wished Captain Machchhar a full and speedy recovery.
The incident has resonated strongly in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders have publicly praised the pilot’s bravery. Across social media and in public tributes, Machchhar has been hailed for remaining calm and decisive even after being wounded, prioritising the safety of everyone on the flight.
The episode stands out as a rare example of international cooperation under life-threatening conditions. An Indian captain, Israeli passengers and Emirati crew members worked together in the confined space of an aircraft cockpit to prevent what could have been a catastrophic outcome.
Captain Machchhar is currently recovering from his injuries. Authorities in the relevant countries are investigating the attack, while messages of support continue to pour in for the pilot whose actions are credited with saving dozens of lives.
