Guwahati, Sept 28: In a significant development in the mysterious death of 22-year-old Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria, Assam Police have arrested a homestay employee identified as Mitu Ali. He is alleged to have supplied alcohol to the main accused, Ashik (also referred to as Asif or Aashique) Ali, and entered the room where the incident occurred on the night of her death.
Nimisha, a sociology student enrolled in a five-year integrated course and a resident of Dharapur, was found unconscious near Garal Primary Health Centre in the Azara area in the early hours of Saturday. She was later declared brought dead at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. Her family has alleged foul play, citing a distress call around 2 am in which Nimisha reportedly told her mother that she was being beaten and assaulted before the call was disconnected and her phone switched off.
Ashik Ali, who has acknowledged being in a relationship with Nimisha, was earlier detained. He claimed she died by suicide after hanging herself from a ceiling fan at Rudra’s Kitchen homestay in Garal. Police have stated they are not accepting this version at face value and are examining all angles, including the possibility of assault.
According to investigators, Mitu Ali was in contact with Ashik and is suspected of supplying him additional alcohol on the night of the incident, when Ashik was already under the influence. Police are also looking into claims that Ali had provided alcohol on earlier occasions and assisted Ashik in taking Nimisha to the homestay multiple times. Information gathered suggests Ali entered Room No. 10, where the pair was staying, that night.
A case has been registered at Azara Police Station. The homestay was earlier sealed by police over alleged lapses in guest documentation. Nimisha’s father has continued to demand thorough investigation and justice, stating that his daughter suffered before her death and that those responsible must be held accountable.
The investigation remains ongoing, with post-mortem findings and further evidence expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death.
