Guwahati, Sept 10: In a major boost for Assam’s cultural and entertainment landscape, British virtual band Gorillaz will perform live in Guwahati on January 31, 2027, as part of their maiden India tour. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the landmark development on Thursday, confirming that the Northeast capital has been added to the itinerary of the globally acclaimed act.
“Delighted to announce that the legendary Gorillaz will perform in Guwahati on January 31, 2027, as part of their first ever India tour. Guwahati is proud to be among the host cities for this landmark tour. Looking forward to welcoming the band and fans from across the country to Assam,” the Chief Minister posted on X, tagging the official Gorillaz account.
The concert is scheduled at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, popularly known as Sarusajai Stadium. A vibrant promotional poster released with the announcement shows the band’s animated members — 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs — dressed in traditional Assamese attire, including gamosas, against the backdrop of the stadium. The poster carries the tagline “Live in India for the First Time” and is co-branded with the Assam Tourism logo and District by Zomato.
Gorillaz, created by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, are making their long-awaited India debut in support of their ninth studio album, The Mountain (also titled Parvat in Devanagari), released in February 2026. Large portions of the album were recorded across India — in Mumbai, New Delhi, Rajasthan, Varanasi and other locations — and feature collaborations with Indian artists including Asha Bhosle, Anoushka Shankar, Ajay Prasanna, Asha Puthli, and the Bangash brothers.
The India leg of The Mountain Tour was initially announced in April 2026 with two dates: January 23 at District Arena @ Terraform in Bengaluru and January 27 at Jio World Garden in Mumbai. The addition of Guwahati expands the tour to three cities and marks the first time a major international act of this stature will stage a full concert in Assam’s capital.
Albarn had earlier described bringing Gorillaz to India as “a dream,” stating: “It has been and remains a dream of mine to bring Gorillaz in all its technicolour glory to India. It’s just the beginning and I truly look forward to the experience.” Hewlett had echoed the sentiment, saying their dream had always been to tour the country.
The Guwahati show is expected to feature the full live band along with special guest performers, potentially including some of the Indian collaborators from The Mountain. Fans can anticipate a high-production spectacle blending the band’s signature animated visuals, eclectic sound and live instrumentation.
Tickets for the Guwahati concert are expected to go on sale through the District by Zomato platform, the same platform handling the Bengaluru and Mumbai dates. Further details on pricing, seating categories and exact on-sale timings are awaited.
The announcement has been widely welcomed as a significant step in positioning Guwahati and Assam as emerging destinations for international live entertainment. Cultural enthusiasts and music fans across the Northeast are already expressing excitement at the prospect of witnessing one of the world’s most innovative bands perform on home soil.
With the January 31 date now confirmed, Guwahati joins the exclusive list of cities hosting Gorillaz on their historic first India tour — a full-circle moment for an album deeply rooted in the country’s landscapes, sounds and spirit.
