Guwahati, September 18: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced the launch of the Assam Bamboo Cycle, an eco-friendly bicycle made from bamboo, positioning it as a key step in transforming the state’s abundant bamboo resources into sustainable livelihoods and green industry.

In a post on X, the Chief Minister highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reform recognising bamboo as a grass had opened new avenues for the sector in Assam. “Assam’s bamboo story is ready to roll!” Sarma wrote, adding that the state was now taking the vision forward with the bamboo bicycle.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Government of Assam and Bamboo India. Promotional material describes it as “Assam’s Green Gold – Now on Two Wheels,” branded as the “abcycle” (Assam Bamboo Cycle).

Sarma invited cycling enthusiasts to experience the innovation, with public test rides scheduled to begin on 2 October 2026 at the Brahmaputra Riverfront in Guwahati. The announcement coincides with World Bamboo Day and underscores the state government’s focus on promoting bamboo-based products for employment generation and environmental sustainability.

The move is expected to boost local entrepreneurship, reduce reliance on conventional materials, and showcase Assam’s potential in the green economy.
