Sivasagar/Guwahati, August 26, 2026: The Assam government has ordered a magisterial-level inquiry into the mysterious death of Manas Jyoti Chetia, a regional leader of the Bir Lachit Sena, following allegations by the organisation that he was attacked and amid rising tension in Sivasagar district.
Chetia was found critically injured beside a road in the Birubor (also referred to as Bihubar) area on August 23. He was rushed to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
According to reports, the post-mortem examination revealed multiple injuries, including severe trauma to the back of his head. The exact circumstances leading to his death remain under investigation.
The Bir Lachit Sena has named 10 individuals in connection with the incident and alleged that “Bangladeshi Muslims” were responsible. These claims have not been independently verified by authorities.
The development has sparked tension in Sivasagar. Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha has accused the police of failing to take action against those named in the FIR and claimed that instead of acting, police were providing them protection. He demanded immediate arrests and warned that the organisation would launch a major protest if the alleged accused were not brought to book. Chaliha also alleged that several suspicious persons had entered the Bihubar area, taking advantage of the recent flood situation, and urged the administration to probe the matter thoroughly.
The government-ordered magisterial inquiry is expected to examine the full circumstances surrounding Chetia’s death, including the nature of his injuries and the sequence of events that led to him being found injured by the roadside.
Police investigations are ongoing, and officials have not yet confirmed the cause or any motive.
