Guwahati, Sept 20: An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 struck the Bhutan-Assam border region on Saturday afternoon, sending tremors through Guwahati and several parts of Assam and the Northeast, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said.

The quake occurred at 4:01 pm IST, with its epicentre located near Gyelpozhing in Bhutan at a shallow depth of about 5 km. Coordinates recorded by the NCS placed the epicentre at latitude 27.163°N and longitude 91.240°E.

Residents in Guwahati and adjoining areas of western Assam reported feeling the tremors. Similar shaking was noted in parts of neighbouring Bhutan. Officials said the relatively shallow depth contributed to the noticeable intensity in the region.

Disaster management authorities and local administrations reported no injuries, casualties or significant structural damage in the immediate aftermath. No emergency advisories were issued, and there were no reports of major disruptions to power, transport or communication networks.

The Bhutan-Assam border belt lies in a seismically active zone of the eastern Himalayas, which has experienced several low-to-moderate magnitude earthquakes in recent months. Authorities continue to monitor the situation for any aftershocks.
