Silchar, Aug 21: In a significant breakthrough against drug trafficking in Barak Valley, Cachar police on Friday seized approximately 70,000 suspected yaba tablets and arrested two brothers from a rented house in South Krishnapur under Silchar Police Station.
The accused have been identified as Ajmal Uddin Laskar (47), also known as Raju, and his younger brother Azim Uddin Laskar (28). Both hail from Syedpur Part-I. Ajmal Laskar is the husband of a former president of the Syedpur Gaon Panchayat in the Sonai constituency.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a police team conducted a raid at a rented premises located behind a mobile phone shop in the Rahim’s Shop area of South Krishnapur. During the search, officers recovered seven packets containing the suspected contraband. The total weight of the seized tablets was around 7.6 kg.
Preliminary field tests indicated the presence of methamphetamine. The tablets have been sent for detailed chemical examination. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and both accused have been taken into custody for further interrogation.
Police sources said investigators are now focusing on tracing the origin of the consignment, its intended destination and possible connections to a wider interstate drug network. The Barak Valley has emerged as a key transit corridor for yaba tablets smuggled from neighbouring states and across the international border.
This is the latest in a series of major seizures made by Cachar police and other security agencies in recent months. Law enforcement agencies have repeatedly highlighted the use of rented houses, commercial vehicles and border routes for transporting the highly addictive synthetic drug, which contains a combination of methamphetamine and caffeine.
Officials described Friday’s recovery as another important success in Assam’s ongoing campaign against narcotics. Further investigation is in progress to identify other members of the alleged supply chain.
